Pair of Anklets
20th century (made)
Place of origin |
A pair of heavy hollow silver anklets in two parts with a hinge and fastening the pins of which are missing in both pieces and replaced by short lengths of wooden sticks. The anklets are made from inner sheets of silver from which a central rectangular strip of metal has been removed. The convex exterior is made from rows of silver hollow hemispheres soldered together with cresting of granules topped with a wire circlet and granulated finial all soldered onto a strip of silver decorated with two strands of beaded wire. On the shoulder adjacent to this cresting there are six decorative knobs of granules with doubtless another pair embellishing the missing hinge and fastening pins. Three or four undeciphered letters in an Indian script have been chased into the inner sides at the base of either the hinge or fastening on both anklets.

Object history | This pair of anklets is part of the large donation of Indian folk jewellery from Dr Waltraud Ganguly which was collected over the last few decades before her death in 2015 from dealers in both India and Europe, in parallel with extensive fieldwork she carried out in the Indian Sub-Continent. It was shown at the exhibition in the Goldschmiedehaus, Hanau, Germany, 18 October 2013 - 18 January 2014. They were bought from a dealer, Mahendra, in July 2007 for 650 Euros. |
Historical context | Heavy silver anklets were deemed to be secure investments by their traditional wearers. |
