In the Dock

Painting
1877 (painted)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Oil painting depicting a group of children holding a pretend court session, in which a dog is standing trial for having killed a rabbit. Seven children are gathered around a table, six wearing wigs, and one with a mortarboard. One child is reading a handwritten sheet of paper, and another is seated at the table writing. A dead rabbit lies on the table in the centre of the table. One of the group is pointing accusingly towards a white dog which is sat on a chair to the right of the painting. The dog's front legs are tied as though handcuffed. A boy stands next to the dog holding its left ear. There is a dark coloured dog (not very visible) between the 'defendants' chair and the table.

The painting is housed in its original gilded frame.
