Paul Duke was born in Edinburgh. He studied at the Royal College of Art and gained a Master of Arts degree with distinction in 1989. Duke returned to the UK after living and working in Italy, and he now lectures in photography at Middlesex University whilst also undertaking commissioned work and personal projects for clients including Levis, Vogue and Warner Bros.

In 2013, Duke published 'At Sea'. The series comprises black and white portraits of the men and women working in the fishing industry on the North East coast of Scotland. Duke set up a portable studio to photograph his subjects uniformly against a black backdrop.

Duke’s work is held in private and public collections, including the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. His work has been exhibited at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Scottish Parliament and the Royal Scottish Academy.
