Malcolm Pride (1930-2003) trained at the Old Vic School. His first major design commission was Volpone for the 1952 season at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. He went on to design sets and costumes for theatre, ballet and opera productions, and his work was seen in London's West End, at Sadler's Wells and the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, and at the Edinburgh Festival. In 1973 he became Head of the Theatre Design Department at Wimbledon College of Art, a post which he held for 27 years.

Physical description | Costume design executed in watercolour and pencil by Malcolm Pride created for Florence in Act 1, Scene 2 and Act 3 of <i>Albert Herring,</i>1970. It shows a full length, profile image of a female figure wearing a black coat with full sleeves which fastens at the centre front with a vertical row of buttons. Underneath the coat she wears a blue and white striped dress the upright collar and hem of white a just visible. She is shown with her left hand resting on the handle of a furled umbrella, and is carrying a wicker basket in her right hand. A small pencil sketch to the left of the main design shows a view of the rear of the coat. Handwritten annotation providing details about colours and fabrics has been added to the design using pencil.A small sample of sky blue fabric, printed with a small motif of white flowers has been glued to the top of the design. |
