Malcolm Pride (1930-2003) trained at the Old Vic School. His first major design commission was Volpone for the 1952 season at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. He went on to design sets and costumes for theatre, ballet and opera productions, and his work was seen in London's West End, at Sadler's Wells and the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, and at the Edinburgh Festival. In 1973 he became Head of the Theatre Design Department at Wimbledon College of Art, a post which he held for 27 years.

Costume design in watercolour and pencil by Malcolm Pride for Nancy in Act 1, Scene 2 and Act 3 of Albert Herring, 1970. It shows a full length image of a female figure dressed in cream dress printed with a pattern of pale blue and brown flowers. It has a close fitting bodice with full sleeves which finish in a tight cuff at the wrist. She also wears a white apron and a black bow in her hair. She is shown holding a pale blue/grey scarf in her left hand, and carrying a whicker basket covered with a checked blue and white cloth over her right arm.
Handwritten annotation providing details about colours and fabrics has been added to the design using pencil.
