Malcolm Pride (1930-2003) trained at the Old Vic School. His first major design commission was Volpone for the 1952 season at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. He went on to design sets and costumes for theatre, ballet and opera productions, and his work was seen in London's West End, at Sadler's Wells and the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, and at the Edinburgh Festival. In 1973 he became Head of the Theatre Design Department at Wimbledon College of Art, a post which he held for 27 years.

Physical description
Design by Malcolm Pride for an unidentified character in The Escape from the Seraglio,1967. It shows a full length female figure dressed in a knee length tunic with a close fitting low bodice, and wide skirt, worn over full, 'harem style trousers.' The tunic is striped in white and pale pink and decorated with a deep pink rose at the centre front of the curved neckline. The trousers match the pattern of the tunic and the figure wears a white sash at her waist. The figure is also wearing a veil decorated at the centre front with a single pink rose. This white veil is draped across the bottom half of her face, and also hangs down behind her head and over the rear of her shoulders.

Small samples of fabric, one a pink and white striped cotton, the others a pink silk braid and green cotton braid have been pinned to the design.
Handwritten annotation recording details relating to the costume, has been added to the design using pencil.
