Natural history was a topic of great interest to Beatrix Potter (1866-1943). She made numerous studies of animals from life and her keen eye for observation is reflected in her book illustrations. This undated sheet includes nine closely observed studies of snails.

Beatrix Potter is one of the world's best-loved children's authors and illustrators. She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale.

Nine pencil and watercolour drawings of snails on a single undated sheet drawn by Beatrix Potter, probably late 19th century; Linder Bequest cat. no. LB.348.
Physical description
A sheet with nine individual studies of snails, one a pencil outline only and the others in watercolour over pencil. Some of the snail shells are richly coloured in reddish browns, while the molluscs themselves are greyish in colouring.

Drawn by Beatrix Potter. Acquired by the V&A from Leslie Linder (1904-1973) in 1973 as part of the Linder Bequest, a collection of ca. 2150 watercolours, drawings, literary manuscripts, correspondence, books, photographs, and other memorabilia associated with Beatrix Potter and her family.
