This crown is part of a ritual costume of carved human bone were worn by lamas (priests) of the Nyingmapa or 'Old Order' of Tibetan Buddhism in exorcism ceremonies. Such costumes were also worn by other Buddhist orders in exorcistic monastic dances.

Physical description
A crown from a ritual dress made from plaques of human bone. The crown consists of five skulls with eyes and mouths painted red. Five leaf shaped plaques above them each is carved with seated Buddhas in the gesture of reverence (anjali mudra). Two side plaques at each end are decorated with carvings of floral and geometric ornament. From these hang three bone plaques joined with eight lines of bone beads. Each has two square plaques carved with open lotus flowers and a triangular plaque above them. From the skulls hang strings of beads with tiny bone "bells" on their ends.
