Stones such as this, either carved with Buddhist prayers or the figures of deities, are made in Tibet as acts of religious devotion. Tibetan Buddhists believe that by doing so they create religious merit. Often called 'prayer stones' they are placed on the top and at the sides of walls that become religious monuments in their own right.
