Place of origin |
After a successful run at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2014, Jonathan Kent's production of Gypsy transferred to the Savoy Theatre in London's West End in 2015. In the role of Mama Rose, Imelda Staunton received great praise from the critics, with the Sunday Times writing, "Just when you think Imelda Staunton has delivered the performance of her career she tops it." The show's posters utilise quotations from the Chichester Festival Theatre run to help advertise the West End transfer, with five golden stars positioned at the top of the poster. Staunton is pictured in costume, centre of both poster and stage, with her left hand reaching out into the audience and thereby pointing at the reader. The theatrical nature of the musical is evoked by fonts constructed from and surrounded by lightbulbs as if theatre hoarding.
