The 1862 Great Exhibition in London was one of the most important exhibitions of Japanese art held abroad prior to the Japan's official representation of itself at the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle. The Japanese section of the 1862 International Exhibition consisted largely of objects organised by the British Minister in Japan, Rutherford Alcock, and the efforts of Captain F. Howard Vyse, the British Consul at Kanagawa.
