Ian Bailey is a designer and printmaker who has made a number of wallpapers which splice together pastiches of design history with political commentary. ‘Rebellion 2’ is a brilliant Punk pastiche of Pugin’s wallpaper designs, and alludes to Pugin’s role in designing wallpapers for the Palace of Westminster, where his papers remain as the backdrop to the business of Parliament to this day. The motifs here, parodying Pugin, include the artist’s initials, strapwork and heraldic motifs, and guns, all printed in bold colours with black and gold. ‘Rebellion 2’ was developed from his original design ‘Rebellion 1’, made in 2010. In ‘Rebellion 2’, the artist’s original delicate design is corrupted and transformed to express his growing anger and disillusionment with Westminster and with authority.
