Place of origin

Jay Musson and Stephen Bennington grew up in Salford and moved to London in the 1960s to study at Central St Martins and the Chelsea School of Art. In the early 1970s, they began selling samples of hand-knit, unisex knitwear to Chelsea boutiques. After working initially under the label 'David and Stephen' they established the company Jay Musson Ltd in the late 1970s.

Knitwear was very important to London fashion design of the 1970s and 1980s. Jay Musson and Stephen Bennington's designs highlight the adventurous and unconventional nature of fashionable British knitwear during the period. This mohair jumper, made in the late 1970s, is an excellent example of the use of unisex patterns and androgynous designs in contemporary British fashion.
