Cassone

15th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Part of a cassone front carved in low relief with a scene of monsters enclosed by scrolls proceding from a central column, the interspaces incised with foliage. Green mastic (possibly wax) fills the flat ground, and a red waxy mastic has been inlaid on the raised surfaces. The reverse plain, with a groove along the lower edge, to serve as a rebate for the chest base. Underneath the lower edge a series of circular holes containing remnants of turned ornaments. Along the top edge a repeated stamped petal motif (matching some of the nail heads on the front). Along the inside face of the top edge scored parallel lines.

The panel appears to have formed the proper right hand side of a chest front, with the remains of metal fixings (two types of nails) and cut out area at the left side for the chest lock (now missing).
