Object history | Rouget de Lisle (1760-1836) was a French army officer during the Revolutionary Wars. He is known for writing the words and music of the 'Chant de guerre pour l'armée du Rhin' in 1792. This would later become popularly known as 'La Marseillaise', becoming the French national anthem in 1795. The stance of Rouget de Lisle in the poster echoes the painting by Isidore Pils entitled 'Rouget de l’Isle chantant La Marseillaise' (1849), which is in the collections of the Musée historique de Strasbourg. |
