Sir Cecil Beaton (1904-1980) was best known as a photographer. Beaton also worked as an illustrator, a diarist, and designer for stage and film. He won three Oscars for costume and art direction for the film version of My Fair Lady (1965) and for Gigi (1958).

Coco is a musical based on the life of Coco Chanel which opened on December 18, 1969 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre and ran for nine-and-a-half months. It was directed by Michael Benthall and choreographed by Michael Bennett. Coco was the most expensive Broadway production at the time. Cecil Beaton designed over 250 costumes, based on the designs of Coco Chanel, were designed by Sir Cecil Beaton.
