Object history note

The suit was worn by Martin Charteris who was an attendant at the wedding of Lady Diana Manners to Duff Cooper on 2 June 1919. Martin was the son of Diana’s sister, Violet who was married to Lord Elcho. This society wedding generated much media and public attention:

"The day itself was unclouded; Diana remembers the nervous wait in the library, immobilised under the huge veil. Then came the drive to St Margaret’s Westminster with the Duke. Their car had to slow to a snail’s pace to make its way through the crowds round the church. The bells were pealing triumphantly as she came out into the sunshine on Duff’s arm, and the children of Viola and Alan Parsons scattered rose petals at their feet "(Cooper.1987).
