Gallery label
Lace making In the 16th century lace making became a commercial activity across Italy, particularly in Venice. bobbin lace was especially fashionable for collars and cuffs. It was made over a pillow (tombolo), with the loose threads wound around wood or bone weighted sticks (bobbins) to give them tension. This specialised and painstakingly elaborate activity was mostly carried out by women from the labouring classes. Border Late 16th century Venice Bobbin lace, in linen thread V&A: 1249-1893 NB: this label is incorrect. It was not in the 16th century that lace making became a commerical activity, and it was not always painstakingly elaborate.(5 Oct 2006 - 7 Jan 2007)
