Photograph showing the front of a 15th century French casket with round-arched lid. The casket is of oak, covered with leather cut with floral scrollwork; the lid also has inscriptions in Gothic characters. It has a twisted handle of wrought iron, and is strengthened with wrought iron bands ending in shells. The lock and band along the front of the lid are pierced with Gothic diaper ornament.

Object history
The object in the photograph formed part of the collection of Emile Peyre (1824-1904), a notable Parisian collector of French Medieval and Renaissance artefacts. The South Kensington Museum (renamed the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1900), bought over 300 pieces of furniture and woodwork, as well as sculpture and metalwork, from him in 1895, including this object.
