Photograph of two 16th century French oak boxes. One is seen from the front, and has relief carving of a winged cherub's head, from whose mouth issues floral scrollwork. The other is seen from the back, and has relief carving of a female bust in a circular medallion in the centre, male busts within half medallions at each side, and floral scrollwork ending in monsters' heads in between.

| Object history | The objects in the photograph formed part of the collection of Emile Peyre (1824-1904), a notable Parisian collector of French Medieval and Renaissance artefacts. The first box is now in the collection of the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin (formerly the Museum of Science and Art), and the second was bought from Peyre by the V&A (formerly the South Kensington Museum) in 1895. |
