Above and below are bands of openwork Gothic tracery with shields. It was used for an altar set against one of the pillars in a French church.

Object history
The object in the photograph formed part of the collection of Emile Peyre (1824-1904), a notable Parisian collector of French Medieval and Renaissance artefacts. This object entered the collection of the Museum of Science and Art, Edinburgh, which is now part of the National Museums of Scotland.
