A photograph of a 16th century French long carved oak panel and the upper portion of an oak screen. The panel is carved in relief with two bands of ornament, the one a conventional vine plant, the other gothic tracery. In the centre is a crown surmounting a shield bearing the royal arms of France that has been much mutilated. The screen is arranged in a series of pointed arches formed by the intersection of round arches; the pointed arches are filled in with openwork tracery and the spandrels with great grotesque masks.

| Object history | The objects in this photograph formed part of the collection of Emile Peyre (1824-1904), a notable Parisian collector of French Medieval and Renaissance artefacts. In 1895 the South Kensington Museum (renamed the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1900), bought over 300 pieces of furniture and woodwork (including these objects) from him. |
