Portrait of Harry R. Beard by H.A. Freeth, copper etching, 1939.
Harry Beard (1912-1970) studied singing and after World War II became overseas operatic critic for The Times, but his great interest was theatrical prints. He amassed a personal collection of over 20,000 prints and playbills as well as texts and paintings. On his death his sister, Isobel Beard, gifted the collection to the V&A where it became the core of the print collection held by what is now the V&A Theatre and Performance department.
