The ‘Palaces of the night’ series developed out of the wheel pins David Watkins had made in gold in the 1990s (see M.12-2010). By 2003 the forms are explored in titanium rather than gold, giving a greater delicacy and the potential for colour. The sprig of leaves and the ladder have been central motifs for Watkins, and in this layering of their outlines at the centre of the wheel he demonstrates his ability to work through a simple and familiar repertoire of forms to achieve a balanced and minimal complexity.
This brooch is one of forty-five pieces of jewellery given to the V&A from the collection of the late Louise Klapisch.
