Place of origin

This brooch is remarkable for its combined strength and delicacy, and its extraordinary lightness. It is not a solid form, rather the surface is made up of shimmering, fine gauge steel wire which is wrapped across the frame. Between the layers shine thin fragments of gold and aluminium foil.

Emiko Suo grew up making jewellery in her father’s workshop in Japan before training formally at Tokyo University of the Arts.

This brooch is one of forty-five pieces of jewellery given to the V&A from the collection of the late Louise Klapisch.
