Earring

Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Fabrice Schaefer has been an influential figure in contemporary jewellery in Geneva through his work, his teaching, and through his founding of Galerie TACTILe in 1998. In the formation of this particular collection of contemporary jewellery he played a guiding role.
These earrings, which reference the naïve flower patterns of folk art, were amongst the first pieces Schaefer created combining titanium and gold. He notes ‘Titanium is a hard material but light and difficult to weld, whereas gold is soft and malleable and easy to solder. Bringing together these two opposing materials meant that I had to develop specific mechanical mounting techniques to join them, thus the ornamentation inlaid in 18 carat gold is used to solder the ear-clip system.’
This pair of earrings is one of forty-five pieces of jewellery given to the V&A from the collection of the late Louise Klapisch.
