Place of origin |
Ruudt Peters is a Dutch jeweller and sculptor, particularly noted for challenging the conventional limits of jewellery. This piece relates to his 1997 ‘Lapis’ series of jewels and installation inspired by the quest for the philosopher’s stone. In his website he cites an instruction in an alchemical text: 'Grind the stone to a very fine powder and put it into the sharpest celestial vinegar, and it will at once be dissolved into the philosophical water'. For the series he ground a variety of minerals and combined the grit with a liquid acrylic which he poured into molds.
This piece, incorporating ground agate, was part of a limited edition of similar jewels all accompanied by a cloth-bound book detailing the Lapis series and presented within a black case.
It is one of forty-five pieces of jewellery given to the V&A from the collection of the late Louise Klapisch.
