Reflecting perspectives

Ring
1997 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The tourmaline set in this ring has a flat, polished surface, but the underside is carved with a geometric design which appears to float within the stone. Its jagged outline extends into the design of the ring, featuring as notches at two corners of the setting and continuing as deep ridges down the gold shoulders.

Bernd Munsteiner, who carved the chevron design into this tourmaline, has been a leading figure in the carving of gemstones for at least three decades. He trained with his father Viktor Munsteiner in the late 1950s, and his artistic approach continues through his son and daughter-in-law who with him now make up the Atelier Munsteiner.

This ring is one of forty-five pieces of jewellery given to the V&A from the collection of the late Louise Klapisch.
