Esther Brinkmann has been a guiding spirit within contemporary Swiss jewellery, through her teaching, her own work, and the touring exhibition Art Jewellery in Switzerland which she co-curated in 2002. This brooch is from a series titled ‘Esparses’ or ‘scattered’. The title refers to the leaves which are cut out and replaced in disorder, evoking a woodland floor in the Autumn.

This brooch is one of forty-five pieces of jewellery given to the V&A from the collection of the late Louise Klapisch.

Physical description

Brooch in the form of a long, shallow rectangular box. The leaf-shaped aperture on its upper surface is partially covered by two flat leaf forms which project slightly to left and right. A steel pin on the reverse. Within the black felt case the pale brown felt is cut to fit the brooch so that it's upper surface is level with the top of the felt.
