Necklace

2004 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Each of the pebble-like beads of Peter Bauhuis’s necklace is individually modelled and cast. Colour is purely from the metals used: the gold is solid, not gilded; the silver oxidises naturally to black during casting and in some cases is cleaned back to grey or white; the red is copper oxide, the product of casting copper; while the brown beads are of bronze. Surface irregularities, more conventionally considered as errors, are appreciated for the variation and texture that they bring, and the interior network of tiny tubes are enjoyed as a reference to the technical necessity for sprues in the casting process.

This necklace is one of forty-five pieces of jewellery given to the V&A from the collection of the late Louise Klapisch.
