After the Second World War the wearing of kimono declined dramatically, but Japanese garments were still donned for special or festival occasions. Traditional motifs dominated, but those that celebrated the modern world were also popular. This kimono jacket (haori) has space exploration as its theme with a design of Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite which was launched by the Russians in October 1957.
