Gloriana, designed by Alix Stone (1913-2010), opened at Sadler's Wells Theatre on 21 October 1966. The opera, directed by Colin Graham and conducted by Mario Bernardi, was a major success for the company. It was revived at Sadler's Wells in 1967 and 1968, and performed at the Aldeburgh Festival in June 1968. In 1969 Stone revised her designs when Sadler's Wells Opera (later to become English National Opera) moved to the much larger stage of the London Coliseum. The production was revived at the Coliseum in 1972, 1975, and !984, when it was recorded for Channel 4 TV and released on video. It also toured to the Vienna Volksoper in 1975, and to the USA where it was performed at the Metropolitan Opera House in the summer of 1984.
