Authorship traditionally ascribed to François Charpentier; historical descriptions by Nicolas Boileau Despréaux.
Engraved allegorical frontispiece by Charles Simonneau after Antoine Coypel; title vignette by Sébastien Le Clerc. Engravings of medals are chiefly by Le Clerc and Coypel.
Leaves 1-286 (printed on rectos only) depict obverses and reverses of medals, with descriptive letterpress within ornamental borders engraved by Louis Simonneau after Jean Bérain. The book marks the first appearance of the specially designed Romain du Roi typeface.
Library's copy lacks printed preface (signed by Jean Anisson but attributed to Paul Tallement), which was suppressed shortly after publication. A MS copy of the preface has been inserted inside the preliminary leaves.
Contemporary mottled brown calf binding, probably a presentation binding from the workshop of the royal binder (Luc-Antoine Boyet) ; covers embossed with French royal arms in gilt.
