The actor/manager Samuel Phelps became known for his productions of Shakespeare's play, in particular for their faithfulness to the original text after decades of bowderlised versions, in which key details were altered or omitted. The character of Hamlet, first performed by Phelps at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket on the 8th of September 1837, became amongst his most famous roles.
