Full length, sepia print of an original photograph by W. & D. Downey. It shows the actor Mr. William Terriss (1847-1897) as he appeared in the title role of in the 1892 production of <i>Henry VIII</i> at the Lyceum Theatre, circa 1892.

William Terriss was part of a cast which included Ellen Terry (1847-1928) in the role of Queen Katherine and Sir Henry Irving as Cardinal Wolsey. The production opened at the Lyceum Theatre on 5 January 1892. Irving spared no expense on the lavish settings and costumes for this production, based on paintings by Holbein.

William Terris, born William Charles James Lewin, was a successful and popular stage actor. On 16 December 1897, as he was entering the Adelphi Theatre to prepare for the evening's performance of Secret Service, he was stabbed to death by a mentally unstable and out of work actor, Richard Archer Prince. His death was met with great shock and sadness both by fellow performers and members of the public.
