Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The company Georgina von Etzdorf was founded in 1981 by Georgina von Etzdorf, Martin Simcock and Jonathan Docherty. Von Etzdorf and Simcock had met studying textile design at Camberwell School of Art and Docherty was a graduate of the industrial design programme at the Central School of Art. Although they initially intended to make fabric for sale to fashion houses, the company had problems getting their designs manufactured commercially and therefore decided to print their own textiles, using these as the basis for clothing and accessories such as scarves. They started production on a very small scale, initially using basic hand printing equipment in a garage and stable block on the Wiltshire property of von Etzdorf’s parents. They moved to larger premises in 1983, setting up a workshop in a flint barn outside Salisbury. In 1984 the company showed a range of accessories at the London Designer Collections show and in 1985 they produced their first full clothing collection. By the early 1990s, Georgina von Etzdorf clothes and accessories were being sold to a large international market. These gloves typify the company’s aesthetic, in particular in the use of colourful, highly organic printed patterns, often without an obvious repeat.
