A collaboration between author, typographer and artist. Barbara Fahrner selected extracts from the published writings of writer and avant-garde composer John Cage, submitting them to the type of chance operations that Cage himself used in his work.

NAL copy is no. 4.

Physical description

"Each of these texts has been given a concrete or typographical treatment by Philip Gallo at the Hermetic Press in Minneapolis using a broad and eccentric range of metal typefaces.

The writing and typography is complemented by Barbara Fahrner's printed linocuts; and extensive hand work of drawn and painted imagery using pen & ink and watercolor.

Published in conjunction with a solo exhibition of Ms. Fahrner's books and drawings at our New York City gallery January 1991. Printed on Rives BFK. Forty-five copies have been made and handbound by Daniel Kelm at the Wide Awake Garage in East Hampton MA.

Ten copies are press lettered a-j and are hors commerce; 35 copies press lettered 1-35. And all copies have been signed by each of the collaborators"--Publisher's leaflet.

Artist's book; gray paper over boards; title blocked in pale blue on front cover; board sheets (of green paper paint-sprayed in several colours) consist of a single sheet functioning as a concertina guard; text block sewn at the spine in three places; lining consists of three small strips of fabric, at the stitching points, to make the green guard visible.
