Women's Bathhouse in the City

Painting
ca. 1848-ca. 1854 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Similar scenes to this can still be found in the hot springs and public baths of modern Japan, as women wash themselves and their children before getting into a large communal bath.

This sketch by Hiroshige features small pieces of paper pasted over the original drawing to allow changes to the design. An inscription on the bottom left, thought to be by one of Hiroshige’s successors, records that it was a commission.
