The cup must have lost its handle at some time, when it was replaced by a metal, purpose made, sheet metal handle. The metal replacement handle has an impressed patent number which indicates that the desgn for it was registered in 1921.

Earthenware cup, Staffordshire or Sunderland, ca. 1880, with metal replacement handle which is clipped onto the rim.
Physical description
Earthenware teacup with blue-printed chinese scene of two figures, repeated twice, in landscape. Painted in overglaze colours and a pale, orange-brown lustre. The handle is missing and has been replaced with a clip-on emergency replacement handle.
