Place of origin

Silk programme produced for the Dublin Grand Opera Society's production of Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci,a 'Special Grand Gala Night' in the presence of His Excellency, the President of Ireland Eamon de Valera, Dublin Gaiety Theatre, 25 April 1973.

Silk and satin programmes were traditionally produced for special evenings at the theatre, often in the presence of a national or local dignatory, in this case the President of Ireland.

There are two copies of this programme in the V&A's collections. This one has a cream fringe, the other has a plain edging. The fringed version may have been given to members of the audience in the expensive seats, or perhaps just to the President and his party, while the plain version was reserved for those in the cheaper parts of the house.
