This book is a collection of kyôka (literally 'crazy verse') with illustrations by the designer Kitagawa Utamaro. Kyôka developed in Japan in the Edo period (1615-1868). Poetry circles sprang up for competition and recreation and often commissioned illustrated anthologies and single-sheet prints of their finest work.

Each page in the book features two poems about two different insects, along with illustrations of both insects and plants. The two poems on this page are about a skink and a rat lizard, which were obviously classed as insects in Japan at this time.
