The Jahangiri Mahal was a zanana (women’s quarters) within the Fort at Agra. The Fort was built during the reign of the emperor Akbar (1556-1605) and was added to later by the Emperors Aurangzeb and Shah Jahan. This building is the most important surviving palace structure of the Akbar period and is populalry known as the Jahangiri Mahal because it is believed that one of the Emperor Jahangir’s wives lived here.

Physical description
This photograph is of some ornately carved pillars in the Jahangiri Mahal. The surrounding walls also have carvings on them. There is a man next to one of the pillars, he gives a sense of scale to the building.

The pillars are part of one wall of a couryard. This photograph shows that grass had filled the courtyard which now has tiles over it.

This photograph was initially part of the photographic collection held in the National Art Library. The markings on the mount are an indication of the history of the object, its movement through the museum and the way it is categorised.
The mount is green with a white label with the title on the top right hand side.
