This Order was instituted by King Leopold I as a reward for services rendered to Belgium. It was awarded to John Charles Robinson (1824-1913), curator, scholar and collector, who worked at the V&A in its earliest days and was a very important figure in the formation of the collections.

Badge, silver and gold, enamelled and set with diamonds, of the Order of Leopold, in the form of a Maltese Cross, Belgian, 19th century
Physical description
Decoration in the form of a white enamelled silver Maltese Cross against a green enamelled laurel wreath. Central blue and red enamelled medallion shows the Belgian Lion rampant. Inscription. Above the main section is a royal crown from which the Order hangs. Cross, wreath and crown are set with diamonds.

This decoration was awarded to John Charles Robinson during his lifetime. It may have been adapted to make it into a special personal award as normal specimens are not shown enriched with diamonds.
