The actress Catharine Maria O'Neal was the third wife of the actor and author Charles Lee Lewes (1740-1803) who changed the name of his surname from Lewis. They married in Edinburgh on 27th March 1783, where she died in March 1796.
She appeared in London only twice - for her husband's Benefit at Covent Garden Theatre on 16th July 1790 and at the Haymarket Theatre on 7th March 1791. Most of her career was spent in Edinburgh from 1792 until 1795, but she is not known to have played this part either in Edinburgh or London.
Colley Cibber wrote or adapted several plays for London theatres where he acted or was manager. The Double Gallant was first performed at the Haymarket Theatre on 1st November 1707.
