In the 1930s and 40s kimono for young boys were increasingly patterned with bold graphic images which spoke of Japanese progress and modernity, the motifs generally being arranged in circular or square cartouches on a chequerboard ground. This example depicts a plane flying over a skiing scene, a car entering a tunnel and a Kodak cinema camera.
