Kimono

1912-1926 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Kimono of the Taishō period are known for their bright, bold patterns. This example reveals the enormous skill with which textile artists of the early twentieth century, who employed the free-hand resist-dyeing technique known as yūzen, exploited chemical dyes to produce designs that were precise and detailed yet dramatic and exciting. Here lustrous silk embroidery has also been used to highlight the petals of some of the flowers, while others have been edged with gold.
