Gallery label
One of the principle ambitions of the Museum's cast collection was to inspire contemporary architects and designers. In the 1860s the Museum acquired a number of architectural casts, including this one. It was taken from a well head decorated with elaborate designs, which echo Byzantine ornamental work.(2014)
