Production
This painting and its companion piece (554-1870) were originally tentatively attributed to Poussin (1893), then to 'school of Poussin'. C. M. Kauffmann believes an Italian origin is likely. This painting is closely related to and perhaps derived from a Jacob and Rachel at the well by Placido Costanzi (1688/90-1759) in the Neues Palais, Potsdam.
