| Object history | NB The term "coon" refers to a demeaning stereotype born out of plantation slavery and applied to African Americans. The term is repeated here in its original historical context. The Finsbury Park Empire was a Moss Empires Theatre. This silk programme was produced for the opening night of the theatre, 5th September 1910, when the acts featured were Madame Fanny Moody & Mr. Charles Manners, 'famous stars of the operatic stage'; George Rae 'the Scotch comedian'; Mae Henderson 'coon comedienne and dancer'; Siems 'coin and card manipulator'; The Motramos (Tony and Marie), musical comedy artistes; the Daunton-Shaw Troupe, Australian trick cyclists; The Kirbys 'in a musical pot-pourri', Bert Coote & Co. in the sketch A Lamb on Wall Street; Helen Trix 'American comedienne and siffleuse', and the American Bioscope. |
