Gallery label
The original bronze candlestick bears an inscription recording that it was made by the bronze founder Maffeo Olivieri as a commission for a bishop. It was presented to St Mark's Basilica in Venice on Christmas Eve 1527 and placed at the high altar. This cast does not reproduce the inscription as it was the intricate construction and fine decoration that the Museum considered would be instructive for British artists and designers.(2014)
