This is a plaster cast by Raphael Pinti, after an original bronze candelabrum in the Basilica di San Marco, Venice. The inscriptions on the original, not reproduced in this cast, relate that the candelabra were made by the sculptor and medallist Maffeo Olivieri (1584 - 1543/1544) and that they were commissioned by Altobello Averoldo of Brescia, Bishop of Pola and Apostolic Legate in Venice. Marin Sanudo records in his diary that they were presented to San Marco on 24 December, 1527 and placed before the High Altar.

Descriptive line

Plaster cast, after a bronze candelabrum in St Mark's Basilica, Venice, by Maffeo Olivieri, Venice, in 1527. Cast by Raphael Pinti in London or Venice, around 1869.

Labels and date

The original bronze candlestick bears an inscription recording that it was made by the bronze founder Maffeo Olivieri as a commission for a bishop. It was presented to St Mark's Basilica in Venice on Christmas Eve 1527 and placed at the high altar. This cast does not reproduce the inscription as it was the intricate construction and fine decoration that the Museum considered would be instructive for British artists and designers. [2014]
